Minister of National Defense Jeong Kyeong-doo asked the U.S. Congress for its unwavering support for the Republic of Korea-U.S. alliance.

On April 24th, the Ministry of National Defense (MND) announced: “Minister Jeong met a delegation of U.S. Senators who were visiting Seoul, which included Christopher Coons and Maggie Hassan, and explained the current security situation on the Korean Peninsula and the status of Republic of Korea-U.S. security cooperation.”

During his meeting with the delegation, Minister Jeong expressed his appreciation for the senators' strong support for denuclearization and the establishment of peace on the Korean Peninsula, while noting that the Republic of Korea-U.S. alliance and the combined defense posture are stronger than ever before. “Building inter-Korean trust through the implementation of the Sept. 19 inter-Korean military agreement will contribute to the objectives that Republic of Korea and the U.S. share; denuclearization and permanent peace on the Korean Peninsula,” he also added, calling for the U.S. Congress’ unwavering support.

In their statement, the U.S. delegation responded, “This visit has strengthened our understanding of the Republic of Korean government’s efforts to achieve denuclearization on the Korean Peninsula through enhanced inter-Korean relations, and helped us to reaffirm the unshakable Republic of Korea-U.S. alliance and combined defense posture.” The delegation also called for close coordination and a firm alliance between Republic of Korea and the U.S. in order to keep the ball rolling regarding denuclearization-related negotiations with North Korea, and vowed to make continued efforts for the Republic of Korea-U.S. alliance and take an interest in easing military tensions on the Korean Peninsula.
