[70th Armed Forces Day] “Soldiers and War Veterans Are Heroes”

Three Themes of ‘70th Anniversary of Armed Forces Day’

① ‘South Korean soldiers in the world to prepare for the future'

② ‘Robust and reliable South Korean soldiers, supporting the establishment of peace on the Korean Peninsula'

③ ‘South Korean people's soldiers, standing by the state and the people for 70 years’

The ceremony to mark the 70th Armed Forces Day will be an event at which soldiers and war veterans receive congratulations and encouragement from the public, as heroes of the day. The ceremony will take place at the Square of Peace in the War Memorial of Korea at 6:30PM.

On September 21st, the Ministry of National Defense announced that the ceremony will highlight the robust and reliable posture of South Korean soldiers in supporting the establishment of peace in the country. The ceremony will have three themes: ‘South Korean soldiers in the world to prepare for the future,’ ‘Robust and reliable South Korean soldiers who support the establishment of peace on the Korean Peninsula,’ and ‘South Korean people's soldiers, working for the state and the people for 70 years’.

The theme ‘South Korean soldiers in the world to prepare for the future’ reflects the intent of South Korean soldiers to contribute to maintaining international peace through overseas deployment, the appreciation the South Korean people have for the veterans from all over the world who participated in the Korean War, and the image of South Korean soldiers preparing for the future and leading the fourth industrial revolution.

The ceremony will use videos to show the efforts made by South Korean soldiers to contribute to maintaining international peace. It will also express the gratitude the South Korean people have for the war veterans from all around the world who fought for the freedom of the Republic of Korea, through an offering of flowers to the stone monuments of the fallen heroes in the Korean War. Significantly, the ceremony will provide a showcase for a combined future combat system of the Army, Navy and Air Force, presenting a paradigm for future combat and a picture of South Korean soldiers leading the fourth industrial revolution.

The theme ‘Robust and reliable South Korean soldiers, supporting the establishment of peace on the Korean Peninsula’ indicates the strong will of South Korean soldiers to support the South Korean people's aspirations - the establishment of denuclearization and peace on the Korean Peninsula - and contribute to peace in Northeast Asia and around the world.

The theme ‘South Korean people's soldiers, standing by the state and the people for 70 years’ reflects the country’s gratitude and encouragement for the South Korean soldiers who have defended the people and the Republic of Korea. The minimum number of active-duty soldiers will be mobilized for this ceremony, to ensure that soldiers are the heroes of the ceremony. An official from the Armed Forces Day Event Planning Group said that the ceremony will be held in the evening in order to allow a greater number of people to join in the ceremony and encourage the soldiers.

The military also plans to hold a number of other events, including an 'Event for the return of 64 remains of South Korean soldiers' which will take place at Seoul Airport in the morning on the Armed Forces Day. The remains are reportedly among the ones that were found during the approximately ten-year US-North Korea joint excavation operations in Jangjin Reservoir, South Hamgyeong Province and Unsan in North Pyeongan Province, which took place from 1996 through 2005.

Also, from September 29th to October 1st, the military will be running a booth showcasing and allowing visitors to experience the latest weapons and military gear near the event hall for the Armed Forces Day ceremony, increasing the significance of Armed Forces Day as a public event. There will also be a commemorative event to be attended by war veterans from UN nations, representatives of the bereaved families of veterans groups, and recognized soldiers of merit in readiness posture.

After the ceremony, the military will continue the Armed Forces Day wave throughout October with diverse events, including the 16 Ground Forces Festival to be held from October 5th through 9th, the 2018 International Naval Review to be held from October 10th through 14th, and the 2018 Sacheon Air Show to be held from October 25th through 28th.
