Withdrawal of a total of 22 guard posts (GPs), 11 GPs on each side ... one GP on each side to be preserved for their historic and symbolic value

South and North Korea have completed withdrawal of troops and firearms from a total of 22 guard posts (11 GPs on each side) in the Demilitarized Zone (DMZ) on a trial basis.

On November 11th, a Ministry of National Defense spokesperson announced: “The military authorities of South and North Korea completed withdrawal of all firearms, equipment, and troops from 11 GPs each on a trial basis on November 10th.”

At the military meeting held in October, the two Koreas agreed to completely destroy 11 GPs within 1 kilometer of the DMZ on each side, and carry out mutual verification in December.

It is expected that the measure will accelerate the withdrawal of GPs on a trial basis, as a follow-up to the 'Sept. 19 inter-Korean military agreement,' with the aim of completing the work 'within the year.'

The ministry plans to complete the withdrawal of GPs on a trial basis within this year after completely destroying facilities and conducting mutual verification. According to the ministry, the complete dismantling of GPs on our side will be conducted in consideration of environmental problems and the safety of the personnel working in the DMZ.

The ministry said, “After the process of destroying the GPs on a trial basis is completed by the end of the month, the military authorities of South and North Korea will conduct mutual verification next month in order to secure the transparency and reliability of withdrawing and destroying GPs.”

While the two Koreas completed withdrawal of all the GPs on a trial basis, one GP on each side will be preserved. The ministry said, "The two Koreas will take measures to completely destroy all other GPs by the end of November, preserving one GP on each side in accordance with the military agreement between the two sides."

During the 10th general-level military talks held on October 26th and via document exchange, the two Koreas decided to preserve one GP on each side for their historic value.

According to the ministry, the two Koreas decided to preserve one GP on each side and withdraw troops, firearms and equipment from the selected GPs, while the facilities themselves are preserved in their original state.

The South selected one GP, built on the east coast, for its historic and symbolic value and its possible utility in promoting peace.

“This GP is located closest to the east coast and has historic value because it was built in 1953, when the armistice agreement was signed,” the ministry explained. “The GP has been selected due to its appropriateness for promoting peace, its link with the Kumgang mountain, east coast, and lagoon, and its excellent access to the Donghae railway along the east coast.”

The North picked one GP in the central region based on their own judgment criteria.
