Minister of National Defense Jeong Kyeong-doo met ‘Congressional Study Group on Korea’ delegation

“The strong support of the U.S. Congress has helped advance the peace process on the Korean Peninsula”

On April 17th, Minister of National Defense Jeong Kyeong-doo gave an overview of the security situation on the Korean Peninsula and asked the U.S. Congress to continue its unwavering support of the Republic of Korea U.S. alliance at a meeting with the delegation of the U.S. Congressional Study Group on Korea (CSGK), which consists of Ami Bera, Mike Kelly, Bill Flores, Derek Kilmer, Jenniffer Gonzalez-Colon and Lou Correa.

The CSGK is a group of U.S. congress members that was organized in order to educate the U.S. congress on the ties between Republic of Korea and the U.S., and to help promote exchanges between Republic of Korea and members of U.S. congress and other government authorities.

Minister Jeong evaluated, “The U.S. Congress’s strong support for the alliance between Republic of Korea and the U.S. has enabled us to advance denuclearization and the peace process on the Korean Peninsula,” explaining, “Republic of Korea and the U.S. military authorities have been maintaining a robust combined defense posture in order to confront any security challenges while militarily backing up the two allies’ diplomatic efforts for denuclearization and the establishment of peace on the peninsula, based on full cooperation." He also called for the U.S. Congress’s support, saying that building trust between the two Koreas through the implementation of the Sept. 19 inter-Korean military agreement would contribute to creating friendly conditions that would enable the North Korea-U.S. dialogue to be resumed. The delegation promised that the U.S. Congress would maintain its bipartisan interest and support.
