Improving quality of life for Lebanese residents, while strengthening harmony between the military and civilians

 

Dongmyeong unit 


Dongmyeong unit, which has been perfectly carrying out its peace keeping operations (PKO) mission in Lebanon, held a completion ceremony for ‘Sewing and Napkin Arts Class’, which is currently performing as part of civil-military operations.


About 90 people including students of the sewing and napkin arts class and residents were invited to the event, held at post of corps, which also featured a bazaar where students could sell their works.


The unit awarded certificates to around 20 students who finished the education program, and offered words of encouragement. As well, an overseas Korean in Lebanon Kim Ju-youn, who has been an instructor of the sewing and napkin arts class since 2012, received a letter of appreciation from the unit.


During the bazaar, students displayed and sold a range of handicrafts including towels, hand mirrors, bags and more, showing how their skills had been developed so far. Thorough this, education acceleration is promoted and the residents and militaries strengthened harmony between them.


Colonel Yang Jun-seob, commanding officer of Dongmyeong unit, said, “I’d like to thank the eager students in the class and Instructor Kim who taught them with all her heart. We will continue to organize practical and effective activities to develop the local community and improve quality of life for residents.”


Hameid Husseiny who completed the class said, “I was lucky to encounter the Dongmyeong unit. Learning the skills, I have the dream of opening my own shop, and will do my best to make that dream come true.”


The sewing and napkin arts class was opened in 2008 for females in 5 villages within the operational area of the Dongmyeong unit. The class is being taught for 3 hours twice a week for 8 weeks, and so far, approximately 600 students have completed the course. The education has been gaining popularity as it makes a contribution to the use of leisure time, self-improvement, household income enhancement and local development.
