Black Eagles, the Air Force's special flight team, showcased the excellence of the T-50, a Korean aircraft, before the world, giving an impressive demonstration at the large-scale Seoul International Aerospace & Defence Exhibition, which was attended by around 500 defense industry companies and 200,000 visitors from 36 countries. Let’s meet the Black Eagles, who gave 8 demonstrations through the airshow, special and friendship flights and local reaction, during LIMA 17 (Langkawi International Maritime and Aerospace Exhibition 2017) held in Malaysia on March 21 to 25.

Malay military called the T-50 "the world's best advanced trainer jet”

“The T-50 is by far the best of all the advanced trainer jets. It has the best mobility, and its stability is brilliant as well”.

Major general Dato Zahani, LIMA 17 air display general manager and Malay air operational commander, gave this praise for the T-50 after his experience flight. 3 Malay air force pilots including Major general Zahani boarded the T-50 aircraft on March 21 and 22, and during an hour-long experience flight, they learned about the features of the T-50 and experienced its excellence.

Malay Defense Minister Hishammuddin Hussein, who watched the airshow, said “Black Eagles are the world’s leading airshow team.” As well, Air Force Chief of Staff Affendi Buang praised the T-50, saying that it would be easy to maneuver as well as operate, while watching the demonstration given by 8 aircraft flying in perfect order.

World visitors, “Bravo! Black Eagles”

“K-POP used to the first thing that came to mind when someone mentioned Korea, but now it's the Black Eagles.”

Samantha Laura John had that to say after visiting LIMA 17. The Black Eagles received an explosive response from local residents in Malaysia. All the foreign news media gathered to cover Black Eagles. One Malay royal showed great interest in the T-50, asking for a meeting with Black Eagles pilots for the aircraft’s performance and operational experience.

The Black Eagles overwhelmed other airshow teams with complex air maneuvers that required a high level of teamwork. People from around the world gave a thumbs up and shouted “Bravo! Black Eagles.”

Tomas Ledajaks, team leader who managed the operation of the booth for STROJIRNA, a Czech defense company, said, “I couldn’t help but just admire the T-50’s outstanding performance when I saw its brilliant air mobility that I’d already heard so much about. It can compete with any of the best advance trainer jets.”

Korea and Indonesia covered the sky with 14 Korean aircraft

On March 24, a ‘friendship flight’ was held with JUPITER, the Indonesian air force airshow team who are operating KT-1. 8 T-50B aircraft for the Black Eagles, and 6 KT-1 aircraft for JUPITER gave a tremendous air performance for about 30 minutes in the skies over Langkawi International Airport in Malaysia. It was the first time that our Air Force had held a friendship flight with an overseas air force that operates Korean aircraft.

The performance was held on Public Day, when many members of the general public visit. We created a magnificent spectacle with our 14 aircrafts developed with our own technology in front of visitors from around the world. Following the friendship flight, Major H. M. Kisha, team leader of JUPITER, said, “It was truly a valuable and priceless experience to see the excellent performance of the Korean aircraft and the outstanding skills of the Korean pilots in the flesh”.

Value that goes beyond an airshow - active support for the bid for the ‘T-X’ project contract worth about 17 trillion won

The display put on at the LIMA 17 Airshow in front of key personnel, the press, defense industry companies and defense acquisition officials from all over the world gathered together was more than just a showcase it will invigorate Korean defense exports and promote our military technology.

Black Eagles has been letting the world know about the excellence of the T-50 through air shows held in the UK and Singapore since 2012. So far, 56 T-50 series aircraft in total have been exported to 4 countries: Indonesia, Iraq, Philippines and Thailand.

At the end of the year, an enterprise will be selected for the US next generation Advanced Pilot Training replacement project, called the ‘T-X’ project, which is worth about 17 trillion won. As a strong candidate, T-50 is now in a fierce showdown with competitors. This is why the Black Eagles’ work showcasing the strengths of the T-50 for the world at LIMA 17 is so valuable.

Colonel Kim Young-haw, commander, 53rd Air Force Special Aircraft Group who led the airshow in success, said, “The Black Eagles has presented our Korean aircraft, the T-50, to the world one more time, giving the best airshow. We’ll continuously dedicate ourselves to enhancing our defense exports and raising the national status of Korea.”
