The Two Koreas Fully Restore Military Communications Line In the East Sea Area

The inter-Korean military communication line in the East Sea area has been fully restored eight years after it was cut off.

“The South and North Korean military authorities have fully restored the military communication line in the East Sea area, following the recovery of the military communication line in the West Sea area on July 16, as part of the implementation of the agreements reached in the Panmunjom Declaration and the inter-Korean general-level military talks. All military communications lines, including an inter-Korean fax and phone line using optical cables, are working normally,” a Ministry of National Defense spokesperson announced on August 15.

The military communications line on the East Sea area has been restored eight years after it was completely destroyed by a wildfire on November 28, 2010. The complete restoration of the military communication line in the East Sea area, following the western military communication line, has led to the establishment of an environment for secure communication channels between South and North Korean military authorities. “This enables the South and North Korean military authorities to support the ‘reunions of separated families event’ that will take place in the Geumgang mountain area from August 20th through 26th, by supporting smooth access and communication. This will help us take military measures for various exchange and cooperation projects between the two Koreas, such as the modernization of the East Sea railroad and roads, forestry cooperation projects, etc.,” the ministry explained.
