On April 4, the Defense Ministry announced that Minister Shin Won Sik participated in the afternoon in an after-school program as a guest teacher at Sinseo Elementary School, Yangcheon-gu, Seoul, where he taught first graders about the South Korean Armed Forces

The after-school program is operated to provide quality education and care to elementary school students before and after regular classes by using various educational resources of schools and communities.

Not only did Minister Shin watch video clips on the Armed Forces, but also participated in hands-on programs with students. These included making soldier figurines and enjoying the performance of a military band. These activities were designed to introduce the students to the armed forces in an easily understandable way, highlighting how they defend the nation’s security.

Minister Shin said, “I hope that the successful operation of the after-school program will substantially ease the childrearing burden for our soldiers.” He added, “The Defense Ministry has striven to help soldiers have a balance between work and home life with various systems such as child care leave. If we are asked by schools to support the program, we will provide educational materials about defense.”

Kim Dong-suk, principal of Sinseo Elementary School, said, “With the Defense Minister's class in the after-school program today, the students became more familiar with the military.”
