Defense ministry undertakes digital shift in defense area to build smart strong forces

On February 23, the Ministry of Science and ICT (MSIT, Minister Lim Hye-sook) and the Ministry of National Defense (MND, Minister Suh Wook) announced ｢smart defense strategies based on D‧N‧A｣ at the 27th general meeting of the 4th term of the fourth industrial revolution committee (4th term committee) under direct presidential control.

The strategies present a vision of ‘constructing smart strong forces and creating a digital new market by spreading national essential strategic technologies, such as Data (D)ㆍNetwork (N)ㆍArtificial Intelligence (A), in the defense area.’ The defense ministry plans to invest 100.3 billion won in 2002 and continue expanding the related budget.

“We will continue to push ahead with smart defense innovation by closely cooperating with the MSIT in the areas of digital infrastructure, artificial intelligence (AI), and software experts, as well as digital technologies,” Suh said, stressing that “high-tech digital technologies based on the fourth industrial revolution will serve as a game changer that leads the future of combat.”
