ROK, US agree to return one quarter of Yongsan military base in the first half of 2022


Two countries also agreed on the return of Camp Red Cloud in Uijeongbu -


165,000 square meters from the Yongsan US Base to be returned first, and one quarter of base to be returned in the first half of 2022 → Construction of Yongsan Park will gain momentum


The Camp Red Cloud (Uijeongbu) will be transformed from a long-term unreturned military base to a hub of local logistics


The Camp Stanley intake station (Uijeongbu) will be returned first for the prevention of flood damage and the safety of the people


The two sides agreed to share environmental information in peacetime, with the aim of ‘strengthening environmental management at the in-use base,’ and improve the ROK-US incident response system → This will be reflected in the environment-related documents of SOFA


Two sides reached consensus on actively pushing for ▵the return of the residual US military bases and ▵environmental agreements, on the basis of ROK-US mutual trust




On Friday afternoon, February 25, the Republic of Korea (ROK) and the United States (US) reached an agreement to return part of the Yongsan US Base, and Camp Red Cloud, a US Army camp in Uijeongbu, through a consultation with the joint committee chairperson of the ROK-US Status of Forces Agreement (SOFA). 



Regarding the return of the military bases, the two sides also agreed to continue discussions on ▵a plan for responsible solutions on pollution issues, ▵a plan to strengthen environmental management, and ▵the possibility of amending SOFA-related documents.
