Ministry of National Defense to release military facility protection zones

The ministry will release 9,050,000 square meters of military facility protection zones, amounting to 3.1 times the area of Yeouido

In keeping with the plan to ‘build military facilities that can coexist with the community,’ a Defense Reform 2.0 initiative project, the Ministry of National Defense will release 9,050,000 square meters of military facility protection zones (amounting to 3.1 times the area of Yeouido).

The ministry decided to release 9,050,000 square meters of military facility protection zones at the ‘military bases and facilities protection deliberation committee’ presided over by the Vice Minister of National Defense on December 10, 2021. Regarding approval on construction or development, the zones to be released do not require a prior consultation with the military.

In addition to releasing protection zones, the ministry adjusted about 3,700,000 square meters of controlled zones to restricted zones. Construction of new buildings is allowed in restricted zones, provided there is a prior consultation with the military, while construction of new buildings is prohibited in controlled zones.

Meanwhile, the ministry newly designated a total of 2,560,000 square meters of land as protection zones, at the minimum range to ensure the smooth implementation of military operations. The new zones are close to key national facilities, military firing ranges and naval bases. The new zones on land will cause no discomfort to residents and will impose no restrictions on the exercise of property rights, as only the inside of the fence was designated.
