Ministry of National Defense holds 「meeting to review the progress of OPCON transition」

Presided over by the Minister of National Defense, a meeting to review the progress of the wartime operational control (OPCON) transition was held in the main conference room of the ministry at 10 A.M., on Wednesday, January 19.

Regarding the main results in 2021, the ministry assessed that it had revised the appendix of Amendment No. 1 of the ‘conditions-based wartime OPCON transition plan (COTP),’ established stable and systematic OPCON transition infrastructures via a joint study on the COTP capabilities, and laid the foundation for accelerating the OPCON transition by agreeing to carry out the assessment of the full operational capability (FOC) of the future combined command in 2022.

Regarding the progress direction in 2022, the ministry has placed an emphasis on the key projects to successfully carry out the FOC assessment, recognizing that the most important OPCON transition project this year is to verify the FOC of the future combined command.

At the meeting, the participants also agreed to develop an assessment plan by organizing and managing a ROK-US joint working-level group to prepare for the FOC assessment, and make systematic preparations for every project on the basis of the joint roadmap between the ROK and the US.

The participants also agreed to devote their efforts to accelerating the OPCON transition by securing core capabilities early so that the ROK military can take the lead in the future combined defense.
