Presided over by Minister of National Defense Suh Wook, a meeting to 「discuss the development of space defense capabilities」 based on 'jointness' was held at 15:00 on Wednesday, November 3.

At the meeting, the top military officials checked the progress so far related to the development of our military's space defense capabilities, discussed the future development direction for space defense capabilities based on our military’s inter-service cooperation, and agreed to make full preparations for space defense technologies and space force to respond to the increasing space threats.

Significantly, the top military officials established a space operations performance system based on inter-service cooperation, in consideration of missions, features, and operational needs of the ministry, the Joint Chiefs of Staff, and each armed service, and also confirmed a plan to boost the national space industry through a space defense project and a plan to develop space defense technologies in the future.

In his opening remarks, Suh expressed his appreciation for our military’s independent attempts to expand its space capabilities, such as the termination of the missile guidelines between the Republic of Korea and the United States, the foundation of a space operation squadron by linking with the performance of space development on a national level, such as the launch of Nuri-ho, and the launch of a communications satellite for military use, stressing that space is a key area with significant impacts on national security.

Suh also said he expects the meeting to build a consensus on the importance of developing space defense capabilities based on inter-service cooperation, and to serve as a cornerstone to concentrate the capabilities and efforts of defense-related agencies and all armed services.
