ROK-Germany Defense Ministers’ Meeting

On the morning of May 26, Minister of National Defense Suh Wook and his German counterpart Annegret Kramp-Karrenbauer visiting the Republic of Korea (ROK) held the ROK-Germany defense ministers’ meeting. They exchanged opinions on ways to develop mutual cooperation in the areas of defense and defense industry between the ROK and Germany, as well as the regional security situation including the Korean Peninsula.
*It has been fourteen years since the last visit to Korea by a German defense minister, which took place when Franz Josef Jung visited the ROK in 2007.

Mentioning that the people of the ROK will always remember how German medical personnel treated more than 300,000 patients during the Korean War, and had contributed to the training of Korean medical personnel, Suh explained that the ROK government had raised the status of Germany as a nation which participated in the war to a nation which provided medical assistance in 2018.

Suh expressed his support for a proposal to strengthen bilateral cooperation in the areas of defense and defense industry, stressing that the ROK and Germany would become the best partners to cooperate with each other to promote common interests in the India-Pacific region from the perspective of history, geopolitics, and strategy.

Responding to Suh’s explanation on the regional situation including the Korean Peninsula, Annegret Kramp-Karrenbauer clarified Germany’s support for the ROK’s peace process on the Korean Peninsula.
