Ministry of National Defense, Gangwon-do and five border areas (...

- The council aims to seek win-win development between the border areas in Gangwon-do and the military


□ The Ministry of National Defense and Gangwon-do held the ‘3rd council for win-win development’ at Sejong Hotel in Chuncheon,

on Tuesday, March 4.


   ◦The first ‘Ministry of National Defense-Gangwon-do council for win-win development’ was held in the main building of Gangwon-do

     on January 16, 2020, and a second council was held in the main building of the ministry on July 21, 2020. This third council was held in

     Gangwon-do.


   ◦ The council is a director-level consultative group, which was established under a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) signed

      between the Minister of National Defense, Governor of Gangwon-do, and governors of five border areas (gun) in Gangwon-do

      on December 17, 2019. It is routinely held twice a year.
       * Cheolwon, Hwacheon, Yanggu, Inje, Goseong


   ◦ Co-chaired by the Director General for Military Installations Planning and the Director of Peace Area Development Headquarters of

     Gangwon-do, this council was attended by vice governors of five border areas, assistant commanders of divisions having jurisdiction,

     etc.


□ From his greeting speech:
   ◦ “I think it is very meaningful that we are holding the 3rd council in accordance with the purpose of the MOU between Gangwon-do

      and the ministry,” Director General for Military Installations Planning Yu Dong-jun said, stressing “The ministry understands

      the difficulties of the local government having jurisdiction over border areas in pushing for a reshuffle of military units, and

      recognizes the importance of pushing forward with national security and community development as a goal of win-win

      cooperation at the same time.”


□  The ministry and Gangwon-do will continue to cooperate with each other to smoothly promote the Defense Reform 2.0 initiative and

 regional vitalization through the development of border areas in Gangwon-do, by regularly holding the council for win-win development.
