Resumption of Korea-Japan Diplomacy and Security Council after a five-year hiatus

- On April 17, the 12th Korea-Japan security policy council took place

On April 17 (Monday), the 12th Korea-Japan Security Policy Council was conducted in Seoul. The council is a "two-plus-two" diplomacy and security dialogue of director-general-level officials. Seo Min-jung, director-general for Asia and Pacific affairs at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, and Woo Kyoung-suk, deputy direct-general for international policy at the Defense Ministry represented Korea, while Takehiro Funakoshi, director-general of Asian and Oceanian affairs at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, and Atsushi Ando, deputy director-general of the Defense Policy Bureau at the Ministry of Defense represented Japan.

The security policy council resumed after a five-year hiatus following an agreement reached during the Korea/Japan summit on March 16 to promptly resume various councils and engage in discussions on shared interests between the two governments to enhance communication.

During the council meeting, officials in charge of diplomacy from Korea and Japan shared their thoughts and ideas on topics of shared interest, such as the security environment in Northeast Asia and the Korean Peninsula, as well as policies and cooperation on bilateral defense security. Additionally, they discussed the directions and priorities for future defense security cooperation between the two countries.
