North Korean drone considered a violation of the ceasefire agreement

Speaking regarding the small-sized aerial device recently found in the Republic of Korea that is assumed to have been a North Korean drone, Minister of National Defense Han Min-koo confirmed the reports, stating that it was a major violation of the Armistice Agreement for a flight vehicle launched from North Korea to pass the Military Demarcation Line (MDL) and enter into the territory of the Republic of Korea on the 14th of this month.

During the National Assembly Defense Committee meeting, Minister Han commented: “After the investigation, we will officially make a formal complaint to the UN Command regarding this violation of the armistice agreement by North Korea, while maintaining our military’s readiness posture.” He also confirmed that there is no doubt that the small aerial device assumed to be a North Korean drone was used to take photos of the THAAD base in Seongju, Gyeongsangbuk-do on the 14th of this month.

On the question of why North Korea had chosen to film with a drone and not with a satellite, the minister explained that it seemed that North Korea had considered every possible means in the situation, given its interest in using limited high-value and high-degree surveillance and reconnaissance measures. He added, “The possibility exists that North Korea could have purchased pictures taken from a commercial satellite, but I think they used a drone instead because it was less costly.”
