DMZ to be developed as global tourism hub, boosting local economy

Starting April 21st, the government will completely open the DMZ peace trail thematic route to allow visitors to experience the values of freedom, security, and peace through cultural, ecological, and historical resources near DMZ areas. This opening is expected to promote tourism and invigorate the local economy. Applications for participation can be made on the Peace Trail website (www.dmzwalk.com) or through the walking travel mobile application, Duru Nubi, starting from March 31.

The eleven thematic routes opening in ten local governments near the DMZ, such as Ganghwa, Gimpo, Goyang, Paju, Yeoncheon, Cheolwon, Hwacheon, Yanggu, Inje, and Goseong, have both walking and vehicle routes. For the safety of participants and to preserve wildlife and plant species, most routes are designated for vehicles. However, in some areas, visitors can walk and reflect on the importance of freedom and peace while remembering the pain caused by national division.

The government hopes that the opening of the thematic routes will revitalize the local economy and promote tourism in the DMZ border regions, which have been underdeveloped due to military restrictions. To achieve this, the government plans to collaborate with local authorities to develop the DMZ and surrounding areas as exclusive peace and ecological tourism resources in Korea, available nowhere else in the world.
