Ministry of National Defense reports 2023 new year business plan

Realizing “peace by force” by building a “robust national defense and science and technology-based military power”

On January 11 (Wednesday), the Ministry of National Defense reported its 2023 new year business plan to President Yoon Suk Yeol at Cheongwadae Yeongbingwan.

Defense Minister Lee Jong-sup presented “realization of peace by force by building a robust national defense and science and technology-based military power” as the goal of national defense for 2023, listed innovation and self-reliance, alliance and solidarity, and welfare and co-prosperity as three lines of effort to achieve the goal, and reported an implementation plan for key initiatives.

Comprehensive and in-depth reports and discussions were made to develop overwhelming response capabilities against North Korea’s asymmetric threats including nuclear and missiles, and topics included: A dramatic improvement in the capability and posture of the Korean triad system, establishment of independent intelligence, surveillance and reconnaissance (ISR), a stronger response to North Korea’s unmanned aerial vehicles, a practical and specific implementation plan for 2023 to strengthen the US extended deterrence, earlier creation of a strategic command, and plans to strengthen combined exercises and drills for 2023.

In addition, the Ministry reported a strategy to foster a virtuous cycle for the “expansion of defense exports – strengthening the defense industry base – establishment of high-tech military strength” to lay a groundwork for a rise to one of the world’s top four defense exporters, as well as core support plans for the expansion of pan-governmental support, improvement of post-sales service, and the promotion of advanced national defense R&D. CEOs of defense firms and defense industry specialists presented creative suggestions and recommendations.
