On April 20, Minister of National Defense Jeong Kyeong-doo visited a minesweeping operation site near air defense camp in the rear area to check the operation procedure and safety management system.

With the goal of ensuring our people's safety, the minesweeping operation near the air defense camp in the rear area started in September last year under a special order from President Moon Jae-in, and is to be completed early.

The military has worked out a detailed plan, introduced the latest nonmetal mine detectors, reinforced individual mine protection equipment, and conducted advance education and training for the minesweeping operation. The operation started on April 6, and will proceed at 36 sites in total, considering the regional situations. The goal is completion by the end of 2021, with areas in which mines have been completely removed to eventually be used as a trail for local residents.

Briefed on the situation of the minesweeping operation, the Defense Minister Jeong said, "We should make full preparation for the minesweeping operation with a sense of duty that protects our people's lives and safety. Safety must come first during the operation, and thorough unit-based and individual preventive measures must be taken given the current situation with COVID-19."

He praised the hard work of military personnel who must carry over 15 kg of operational equipment in the steep mountainous region while conducting their tasks. The soldiers who have been thrown into the operation wear individual protection equipment, including a protective helmet, mine-protective clothing, bulletproof vest, mine boots, and overshoes.

He also passed along a request that all military personnel fulfill their duties and complete the minesweeping operation successfully without a single safety accident.
