“Very proud of the U.S. Second Division that contributed to the development of Korea where achieved the ”Miracle on the Han River“ from the ashes of the Korean War.”

The U.S. 2nd Division in Korea held an event to mark the 50th anniversary of the station on the Korean Peninsula at Camp Red Cloud in Uijeongbu, Gyeonggido, on July 1.

The event, held by Major General Theodore Martin, a divisional commander of the 2nd as well as Korea-U.S. combined divisional commander, was attended by 30 members of the 2nd Indianhead Division Association.

It is the only unit stationed at the overseas front in the 240-year history of the U.S. Army. The division was established in 1917 and entered World Wars I and II and the 6·25 Korean War.

Also, it was the first unit to arrive on the Korean Peninsula from the continental U.S. during the Korean War, and now, the last division stationed overseas. It has been reorganized as the Korea-U.S. combined division, continuing its history and tradition.

“The U.S. 2nd Division has served where Republic of Korea, symbolizing freedom and prosperity, has been separated from North Korea, the communist tyranny, for 50 years. I am very proud of my division that contributed to the development of Korea and achieved the ‘Miracle on the Han River’ from the ashes of the Korean War,” said Major General Martin.

Meanwhile, General Park Seon-woo, a deputy commander of the Korea-U.S. combined forces command, conveyed a memorial plaque of alliance to the 2nd Indianhead Division Association that showed dedication to the Korea-U.S. alliance at the Army Hall in Seoul, on June 29.

He said, “You shared one chapter of Korean history with our people, and you are the real heroes. The strength of the Korea-U.S. alliance has been possible because of the U.S. 2nd Division’s commitment and effort, which is evaluated as the most successful alliance in the world. I hope this strong alliance lasts.”
