Republic of Korea, Oman to speed up “cooperative steps” by signing MOU on defense cooperation 

Minister of National Defense Jeong Kyeong-doo’s visit to Oman paved the way for close cooperation between Republic of Korea and Oman in national defense and the defense industry … Minister Jeong also offered words of encouragement to Cheonghae Unit soldiers 

Republic of Korea and Oman signed a memorandum of understanding (MOU)　on defense cooperation, and agreed to make efforts to come up with follow-up measures to further enhance the cooperation.

The Ministry of National Defense made the announcement on October 8. “Prior to the signing of the MOU, on October 7 (local time), Minister of National Defense Jeong Kyeong-doo, who was in Oman for an official visit, and his Omani counterpart, Sayyid Badr bin Saud, held talks and exchanged their assessment of the regional situations on the Korean Peninsula and in the Middle East, and agreed to cooperate closely with the international community for regional peace and stability,” the ministry said.

The talks were attended by the chief of the Office of National Defense Policy, an officer from the International Policy Bureau, and an officer from the Military Force Policy Bureau from Republic of Korea, and the Secretary General of National Defense (deputy minister), the Chief of Staff, and Army Commander from Oman. 

Minister Sayyid Badr bin Saud assessed that Minister Jeong’s visit to Oman would pave the way for cooperation in national defense and the defense industry between the two countries, following the bilateral ministers’ talks that were held in February on the sidelines of the Defense Exhibition in the United Arab Emirates.

Minister Jeong also expressed his thanks to the Oman authorities for their support of the Cheonghae Unit, which has helped the Unit to carry out its missions to support safe sailing as well as anti-piracy missions. He visited the Cheonghae Unit, which is stationed in the Gulf of Oman off Muscat, to encourage the troops there and looked around Oman's Armored Unit before returning home. 

The ministry expressed its hope that Minister Jeong’s visit to Oman will contribute to enhancing bilateral cooperation in national defense and the defense industry between Republic of Korea and Oman.
